How to Find a Licensed Roofer in Alabama (2026 Checklist)

Storm chasers cost Alabama homeowners millions every year. Here is the exact 7-point checklist we tell our own friends and family to use before signing any roofing contract.

Alabama requires residential roofing contractors performing work over $10,000 to be licensed through the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board (opens in new tab). That bar is low — and after every storm, dozens of unlicensed crews fan out from Birmingham to Athens promising free roofs. This guide is the same checklist we use to vet sub-contractors. It will save you a five-figure mistake.

1. Verify their HBLB license number

Ask for the license number on the spot, then look it up directly at the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board public registry (opens in new tab). The name on the license must match the name on the contract. Out-of-state LLCs registered to dodge complaints will fail this test.

2. Request a current Certificate of Insurance

Two policies matter: general liability ($1M minimum) and workers' comp. Have the contractor's agent email the COI directly to you — never accept a screenshot. If a worker is injured on your roof without comp coverage, you can be held liable.

3. Check their BBB profile and complaint history

Look for at least 3 years of operating history, an A or A+ rating, and how the business responded to any complaints. Our own BBB profile is here (opens in new tab) for reference. Complaints aren't the red flag — it's how they were resolved.

4. Confirm manufacturer certification

Real manufacturer certifications (GAF Master Elite (opens in new tab), Owens Corning Platinum (opens in new tab), CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster (opens in new tab)) unlock the extended workmanship warranties — without them, your "lifetime warranty" is only on the shingle, not the install.

5. Ask for three local references — and call them

Specifically request references from your own zip code or city. A roofer who has worked Hampton Cove, Madison, or Big Cove for years can name streets. A storm chaser cannot.

6. Read every line of the contract

  • Total price with line items
  • Brand, line, and color of materials
  • Start and substantial-completion dates
  • Workmanship warranty length (10 years minimum)
  • Payment schedule (avoid more than 10% deposit)
  • Cancellation and dispute language

7. Spot the red flags

Walk away if you see…

Door-knocking right after a storm · No physical local address · Demands for full payment upfront · Pressure to sign 'today only' · Won't show the HBLB number · Won't pull the permit themselves.
