Type "best roofing companies near me" into Google from anywhere in North Alabama and you'll see the same dozen names. Some are excellent. Some have bought their way to the top. This guide is how to tell them apart in 10 minutes.
Read the Google Business Profile correctly
- Look for 100+ reviews. Anything under 30 is too small a sample.
- Spread matters more than average — a 4.8 with 400 reviews beats a 5.0 with 12.
- Click into the 1- and 2-star reviews. How the owner responded tells you everything.
- Check the profile age in the photos tab. Year-old companies often have no real history.
The credentials that actually mean something
- HAAG Certified Inspector (opens in new tab) — the standard for forensic roof inspection used by insurance carriers
- GAF Master Elite (opens in new tab) — top 2% of GAF-certified contractors
- Owens Corning Platinum Preferred (opens in new tab) — top 1% of OC contractors
- NRCA membership (opens in new tab) — National Roofing Contractors Association
- Active HBLB license (opens in new tab) (Alabama state requirement)
Match the company to your geography
A Birmingham roofer can drive to Decatur, but the closer the home office, the faster the warranty service. If you're in Huntsville, Madison, or Hampton Cove, prioritize crews within 30 miles. Same logic for Birmingham-area homeowners.
Make the quotes apples-to-apples
Force every bid into the same line items: shingle brand and line, underlayment type, ice & water coverage area, drip edge, ridge vent, flashing, decking allowance, and permit. Anything missing is either bundled or being skipped — ask which.
Five questions that filter out pretenders
- "Will you pull the permit, or do I?"
- "What's your dump fee for tear-off?"
- "How many courses of ice & water shield in the valleys?"
- "Who's the foreman on my job, and how long have they been with you?"
- "If you find rotten decking on tear-off day, what's the per-sheet rate?"
